Creative, Mira Ardhaningswari Develops Bodymist from Kenanga Essential Oil Using Microemulsion Technique

Ni Kadek Mira Ardhaningswari, who is often called Mira, successfully earned her Bachelor of Agricultural Technology (S.TP) degree on December 6th , 2022 at the Agroindustrial Technology Study Program, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Udayana University by conducting a study on the Effect of Surfactant Mixture Ratio and Surfactant Mixture Ratio with Cananga Essential Oil ( Cananga odorata) under the guidance of Dr. Ir. Lutfi Suhendra, M.P. and Dr. Luh Putu Wrasiati, M.P.

The research was to make a mixed formulation of surfactant Tween 20: Tween 80: Span 80 and a mixed formulation of surfactant with ylang essential oil to determine the effect of these formulations on the characteristics of ylang ylang essential oil microemulsion as a body and to find out the right formulation for the characteristics of ylang ylang essential oil microemulsion as a body mist to produce the best body mist. Ylang ylang essential oil was used in this study because the ylang flower has a distinctive and delicate aroma, making it suitable for use as a fragrance in the manufacture of body mist products that can be used in daily activities. This research was conducted at the Process Engineering and Quality Control Laboratory, Food Analysis and Food Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Udayana University from March 2022 to May 2022.

The manufacture of ylang ylang essential oil microemulsion was made from three types of non-ionic surfactants, namely Tween 80, Tween 20 and Span 80, using 5 treatments. Each treatment was repeated 4 times to obtain 20 experimental units. Furthermore, the formulation was stirred on a hot plate using a magnetic stirrer for 4 minutes at a speed of 700 rpm, at a temperature of 70oC ± 5oC. The stirring process was continued by adding 10 ml of distilled water drop by drop so that the solution did not clump. Then incubated for 24 hours at room temperature.

Mira Ardhaningswari reported in the resulting research that the surfactant mixture ratio Tween 80: Tween 20: Span 80 in the RS1 treatment (2.75: 97: 0.25) was the best treatment for making ylang ylang essential oil microemulsion as a body mist with microemulsion characteristics that had transparent appearance and the treatment had the smallest turbidity index value before centrifugation, namely 0.218 ± 0.015. While the ratio of surfactant mixture and ylang essential oil in treatment (82.5: 17.5) was the best treatment for making ylang ylang essential oil microemulsion as a body mist. This treatment has a particle size of 17.3 ± 6.3 nm, and the largest droplet size is 15.8 nm. Microemulsion of ylang essential oil against dilution using pH 4.5, pH 5.5 and pH 6.5 with a ratio of 1:9 was stable during storage.
