Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UNUD Collaborated with AFKHI and FAO to Hold a One Health Concept Pilot in Handling Rabies in Sanur Village, Denpasar

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM) of Udayana University together with the Association of Indonesian Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (AFKHI) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the Mayor of Denpasar, the Department of Agriculture and Food, Sanur Village, Dharma Program, Bali Animal Welfare Association Foundation, GoChip, and the community of Sanur Village carried out a pilot implementation of the One Health concept in controlling rabies in the community. Taking place on Friday, June 24, 2022, at the Pasekuta Environmental Sambangan Hall, Sanur Village, South Denpasar.

This activity was carried out in order to introduce and demonstrate to students of the Veterinary Professional Program the concept of one health directly in the community in an effort to overcome zoonotic diseases, in this case rabies. The concept of one health that is implemented is to communicate, coordinate and collaborate between institutions in controlling rabies. This collaboration can be carried out because all collaborators have understood that the problem of zoonotic diseases is a common problem that cannot be separated, where diseases in humans, animals and the environment become a single unit that must be handled together.

Each professional institution gives its best in this activity. Students from FVM Unud conducted education and socialization about the dangers of rabies, procedures for first aid if they were bitten by a rabies-transmitting animal, the importance of caring for pets, the importance of vaccination, and keeping the environment clean. The Mayor of Denpasar through the Department of Agriculture and Food dispatched a rabies vaccination team to increase vaccination coverage. The Dharma program and the Sanur Village sent a team of rabies cadres to invite the community to participate, record data and educate the community. BAWA Foundation sent its sterilization team to carry out population control management of rabies carier (RC). Meanwhile, the GoHip Foundation provides microchip installation services on sterile RC to facilitate data collection. In this activity, 68 RC were successfully vaccinated, and 24 sterilized dogs consisting of 13 females and 11 males.

drh. Kadek Karang from FVM Unud who is the chairman of the program implementation committee said that this kind of activity is very beneficial for students. "In campus they have been taught theory, and by following direct programs like this," he said. In closing, Drh Karang stated that by following directly the students would really understand the concept of One Health, which is indeed useful and makes the management of zoonoses easier.
