Doctor of Medical Sciences Proves the Role of Pregnancy Massage in Reducing Anxiety in Pregnant Women

Pregnant women are a group that is vulnerable to mental health problems, emotional disorders or psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety and stress which if not done prevention or treatment can have a negative impact on the mother and the baby to be born. This study aims to prove that pregnancy massage given to pregnant women in a class for pregnant women can reduce depression, anxiety and stress.

This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest and posttest control group design. The study was carried out in a class of pregnant women at the Denpasar City Health Center involving 56 pregnant women who were divided into two groups, namely 28 pregnant women who were included in the class of pregnant women with pregnancy massage and 28 pregnant women were included in the control group, namely the conventional pregnant women class. Levels of depression, anxiety and stress were assessed using the DASS questionnaire, while the level of pain felt by pregnant women was assessed by a pain questionnaire and pulse rate was assessed by a digital sphygmomanometer.

The study showed significant results that pregnancy massage can reduce depression, anxiety and stress in pregnant women in the class program for pregnant women. The decrease in depression scores after receiving pregnancy massage was in the control group of 16.28 (moderate category) and in the treatment group the depression score was 12.39 (mild category) so that there was a decrease in depression scores of 3.38 or 23.9%. The value of the decrease in anxiety scores after receiving pregnancy massage was the score in the control group of 19.57 (severe category) and in the treatment group of 10.93 (moderate category) so that there was a decrease in anxiety scores of 8.64 or 44.1%.

The value of the decrease in stress scores after receiving pregnancy massage in the control group was 20.92 (moderate category) and 17.11 in the treatment group (mild category) resulting in a decrease in stress score of 3.81 or 18.2%. In the control group the pain score was 6.71 (moderate category) and in the treatment group the pain score was 2.40 (mild category) so that there was a decrease in pain scores by 4.31 or 64.2%. In the control group, the pulse score was 95.49 and in the treatment group the pulse score was 87.99, resulting in a decrease in pain score of 7.5 or 7.85%. So that these results can be used as reference material in the prevention and treatment of depression, anxiety and stress in pregnant women.
