Giving Oral and Nail Disease Vaccination to Livestock as a Community Services Program in Celuk Village

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is indeed a hot topic of conversation in the livestock area. The disease is known to attack even-toed animals and has resulted in a drastic economic downturn in countries where the disease is endemic. This year, Indonesia was again tested positive for FMD after several decades ago being free from the disease caused by the virus. As a response to the spread of this disease, many actions have been taken to minimize the spread of FMD among livestock in Indonesia, one of which is vaccination.

Responding to the current condition of the spread of FMD, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University then formed a volunteer team that aims to assist FMD vaccination activities on livestock on the island of Bali, especially Bali cattle. This volunteer team consists of students from the 2019 to 2021 batches who are willing to help with FMD vaccinations. The activity was also assisted by Community Services/KKN students who were in 134 villages throughout the island of Bali.

On Saturday (23/7), Celuk Village got their turn for FMD vaccination. The vaccination activity was attended by FMD volunteer students, students who were carrying out KKN activities in Celuk Village, and veterinarians from Celuk Village. FMD vaccination was given to Bali cattle located in three banjars in Celuk Village, namely Banjar Celuk, Banjar Tangsub, and Banjar Cemenggaon. The vaccination activity started at half past 12 noon, and the good response from the farmers in Celuk Village made the vaccination activity run smoothly and well.

The vaccination activities by the FMD volunteer team of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University will continue to other villages on the island of Bali. It is hoped that this FMD volunteer activity can help prevent transmission and reduce the positive number of FMD in Bali. Volunteer activities are also expected to help students learn many things while in the field.
