Udayana University once again held The 4th Udayana University International Advisory Board (IAB) Annual Meeting
Denpasar – Udayana University once again held The 4th Udayana University International Advisory Board (IAB) Annual Meeting, which took place in a hybrid format on 12 November 2025. The meeting was attended by members of the International Advisory Board from various countries, university leaders, and faculty representatives. This annual agenda serves as a strategic forum for Udayana University to receive insights and guidance from international experts in strengthening its progress toward becoming a world-class university.
In his remarks, the Rector of Udayana University, Prof. Ir. I Ketut Sudarsana, S.T., Ph.D., expressed profound appreciation for the participation and dedication of the board members who have made significant contributions to the university’s development. “Let us take a moment to reflect on our shared journey in expanding research networks and global experiences. The achievements we have attained are the result of the board members’ guidance and leadership. We hope this meeting brings meaningful impact and outcomes for all of us,” he said.
This fourth meeting also marked the addition of new IAB members, namely Prof. Yoichiro Kato from the University of Tokyo, Japan; Associate Professor Carol Warren from Murdoch University, Australia; Prof. Ida Ayu Astarini, and Prof. Darma Putra from Udayana University. The introduction of new members was led by the IAB Chair, Prof. Vickers, who also facilitated the main discussion session.
During his presentation, the Rector outlined various achievements and developments of the university throughout 2024. One of the main priorities highlighted was the internationalization strategy as a key transformation pathway toward becoming a Legal Entity State University (PTNBH) and a world-class university. “Internationalization is the core strategy in realizing Udayana as an independent, excellent, and culturally rooted university. We are targeting PTNBH status by 2025, a research university by 2032, and a culturally rooted World-Class University by 2042,” he stated.
The Rector also discussed the landscape of higher education policy in Indonesia in 2025, where government budget efficiency has become a challenge for many institutions. However, he emphasized that this situation also opens opportunities for universities to serve as strategic government partners in various development initiatives, including food security, artificial intelligence technology, and the energy sector. “The Ministry encourages universities to collaborate internationally and make a real impact on society,” he explained during the discussion.
Responding to the discussion, Prof. Vickers viewed the government’s policy direction as a positive momentum for Udayana University to strengthen collaboration with regional governments, particularly in Bali, to support programs based on local wisdom. Meanwhile, Prof. Harry Palm highlighted Indonesia’s significant progress in aquaculture over the past 15 years and inquired about the government’s policy direction and Udayana’s contribution to the sector. The Rector responded that the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries at Udayana University, through its aquaculture programs, continues to support the government’s agenda for achieving national food security.
The discussion also addressed issues related to climate change and natural disasters. The Rector explained that Udayana University has expanded its collaboration with the provincial government to overcome regional challenges such as waste management, traffic congestion, sustainable tourism, and food security. “We are also preparing a policy laboratory to support the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs in formulating immigration policies,” he added.
Closing the meeting, the Rector conveyed his appreciation for the dedication of all board members who have provided valuable insights and recommendations. “Today we have proven that collaboration knows no boundaries. Your perspectives and ideas will become the blueprint for Unud’s transformation into a world-class university rooted in Balinese culture,” he stated.
With a spirit of cross-country and interdisciplinary collaboration, Udayana University remains committed to realizing its vision of becoming an excellent, independent, and culturally grounded university that contributes significantly to global development from the heart of Bali.
