Neurosurgery Specialist Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University Holds Training "Basic Neurosurgical Skill Course 2022"

In order to continue the development of basic surgical skills in the field of neurosurgery, the Neurosurgery Specialist Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University  (FK Unud) held a training activity "Basic Neurosurgical Skill Course (BNSC) 2022" at Aesculap Academy BiTDeC Bali International Training & Development Center on 5-6 November 2022.

This event began with remarks from the Chairperson of the BNSC 2022 Committee, dr. Dewa Putu Wisnu Wardhana, Sp.BS(K), FICS, followed by remarks from Chef De Clinique, Neurosurgery Specialist Study Program, FK UNUD, Prof. Dr. dr. Sri Maliawan, Sp.BS(K), and remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Unud, represented by the Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs and Planning, Dr. dr. I Gede Eka Wiratnaya, Sp.OT(K).

In his speech, Dr. Eka Wiratnaya, appreciated the interest of the participants from various regions in Indonesia who took part in this training to hone basic skills in the field of neurosurgery.

This training aims to introduce the basic techniques of neurosurgery and improve the ability of participants so that they can support services in the field of neurosurgery. In addition, it is also expected to increase the competitiveness of participants with doctors abroad. This activity was attended by general practitioners with an interest in neurosurgery and resident neurosurgeons.

The program on the first day was continued with the presentation of 4 sessions of material then practicum guided by competent speakers in the field of Neurosurgery. The first topic was brought by dr. Dewa Putu Wisnu Wardhana, Sp.BS(K), FICS on "Craniotomy and Drilling Technique", followed by the second topic by Prof. Dr. dr. Sri Maliawan, Sp.BS(K), FICS on "Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy". The event was continued by Prof. Dr. dr. Tjokorda Gde Bagus Mahadewa, M.Kes., Sp.BS(K)Spinal, FICS, FINSS who presented the topic with the title "Basic Spine Instrumentation, Placement of Pedicle and Lateral Mass Screw".

The second day's event was also divided into 4 sessions of material presentation and practicum. The first topic was brought by Prof. Dr. dr. Tjokorda Gde Bagus Mahadewa, M.Kes., Sp.BS(K)Spinal, FICS, FINSS with the topic "Peripheral Nerve Repair Technique", followed by the second topic by Dr. dr. Nyoman Golden, Sp.BS(K), FICS with the topic "Transsphenoidal Approach". The event was then continued with the giving of the third lecture by Dr. dr. I Wayan Niryana, M.Kes., Sp.BS(K), FICS with the topic "Aneurysm Clipping Technique" and the fourth lecture by Dr. Made Gemma Daniswara Maliawan, M.Ked.Klin., Sp.BS with the topic "Vascular Micro Anastomosis".

In the implementation of this training, the participants were introduced and trained on how to use sophisticated neurosurgery tools and are the latest output. In addition, the Neurosurgery Specialist Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University made a new breakthrough by presenting the Neurosurgical Simulator tool from UpSurgeOn which is used in the “Transsphenoidal Approach” and “Aneurysm Clipping Technique” practicum. The use of this tool from UpSurgeOn allows trainees to feel like they are doing this surgical technique on real patients. This is the latest innovation from the BNSC 2022 activity, and is the first activity in Indonesia that utilizes this Neurosurgical Simulator.

The whole series of activities ended with a closing by Prof. Dr. dr. Tjokorda Gde Bagus Mahadewa, M.Kes., Sp.BS(K)Spinal, FICS, FINSS and group photo session. The hope is that this BNSC training can be used as a standard for basic skills training in the field of neurosurgery nationally.
