ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF LATEX ETHANOL EXTRACT OF ALOE VERA AGAINST GROWTH OF MULTI-DRUG RESISTANT PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA (MDRPA) IN VITRO

Anthraquinone in latex (juice) of Aloe vera was reported have an anti-bacterial agent. This finding leads an interesting research to know deeper its efficacy. This research was aimed to know the anti-bacterial effect of latex ethanol extract of Aloe vera on multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRPA) bacteria. Aloe vera latex extraction was started initially by cutting base of plant and drying up to 24 hours to get its powder and maceration was performed by using 96% ethanol up to 2 days and continued by evaporation at 400 C. MDRPA isolate was cultured on Mueller Hinton agar plate. Paper discs containing latex ethanol extract of Aloe vera with various concentration (10% (P1), 30% (P2), 50% (P3), 70% (P4), and 100% (P5)) were used for this experiment, while 96% ethanol used for negative control (K1). All of discs were put on plates and incubated for 18-24 hours at 370 C. The average of inhibition zones of K1 = 0 mm, P1 = 7.83 mm, P2 = 12.25 mm, P3 = 13.3 mm, P4 = 14.15 mm, and P5 = 16.09 mm. Mean of inhibition zones were different between various extract concentration significantly (P < 0.01), meanwhile a non-significant result between concentration of 30%, 50%, and 70% were revealed. Correlation and regression analysis were showed that a strong relationship (R = 0.906) between increasing of concentration extract with inhibition zone diameter. This study showed that latex ethanol extract of Aloe vera could inhibit the growth of MDRPA bacteria.
