Blood transfusion is an important modality in the treatment of blood deficiency thus it requires well blood donor management and inspection. Blood donor units (UDD PMI) as the unit for managing blood products in Indonesia, carry out the blood donor screening for four infectious diseases including HIV and syphilis. HIV and syphilis are two infectious diseases through transfusion and also sexually transmitted. The diseases are increasing every year. Thus it is necessary to find out the characteristics of donors, and the prevalence of HIV and sypilis in the donor. This research was conducted in the blood donor unit Bali Province-Sanglah hospital by using cross sectional descriptive methods. The data were conducted in the form of number, age, gender, reactive HIV test and reactive syphilis test results on donors from January to December 2013. Donors are recorded in blood donor unit in 2013 as many as 36486 donors. They are consisted of 7082 (19.41%) replacement donors and 29401 (80.58%) oluntary donors. Donors in both groups are higher in age group of 17 to 30 years (36.40% and 33.05%). Participation of men are higher than women in both groups (94.99% and 90.54%). The prevalence of HIV infection is 0.27%. The prevalence of HIV infection in the replacement donor is 0.28% and 0.27% in voluntary donors. The prevalence of syphilis infection is 0.77%. The prevalence of syphilis infection in replacement donors 0.89% and 0.74% on voluntary donors. These results indicate that although the percentage of reactive results are slightly small, but it can estimate that there are some people who do not recognize the infections thus they donate blood. Further research is required to compare the level of safety of replacement donors and voluntary donors for the infection through blood transmission thus it can estimate the plans and policies to improve availability of safe blood.
