THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PROXIMAL FEMUR FRACTURE AT SANGLAH CENTRAL PUBLIC HOSPITAL IN DENPASAR IN 2013

Background: The number of elderly in the world keep increasing which is followed by the increasing number of geriatric patient and its various complications. One of the complications from its degeneration process are proximal femur fracture. The risk of experiencing complications is increased along with the increasing number of osteoporosis in the elderly. Femur fractures in general can quickly worsen the quality of life due to the disability or other worse complications and sometimes death. However, to date research on proximal femur fracture in Indonesia , especially in Bali still very rare. Even to this day there has been no data on the incidence of femur fractures in geriatrics in Bali. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of these fractures in geriatrics at Sanglah Central Public Hospital in Denpasar. Methode: A descriptive study was conducted on 66 patients with proximal femur fracture which is aged over 45 years old at Sanglah Central Public Hospital, Denpasar between January 2013 and December 2013. The data was collected from the medical record in patient ward Angsoka and Sanglah Central Public Hospital medical record storage department. Stastical analysis was performed using SPSS program. Result: There were 66 patients include of 45 (68,2%) women. The average age is 67,71+13,46 years old. From the total sample were obtained at at risk aged group was 32 (48,5%) patients. Based on the type of the femur fracture was reported, neck femur fracture 21 (31,8%) cases; intertrochanter fracture 32 (48,5%) cases and subtrochanter fracture 13 (19,7%) cases. Based on the intensty of the trauma was divided into low-energy trauma 31 (47,0%) cases and high-energy trauma 35 (53,0%) cases. Conclusion: The characteristics of proximal femur fracture in geriatric patients at Sanglah Central Public Hospital in 2013 was reported more common in women, intertrochanteric fracture type, at risk aged group and the mostly occur after high-energy trauma.
