THE PREVALENCE OF MOISTURIZING AND POWDER COSMETICS USAGE ON MEDICAL STUDENTS OF UDAYANA UNIVERSITY WHO SUFFER ACNE VULGARIS IN 2014

Acne vulgaris is a high prevalence disease in Indonesia. The use of comedogenic cosmetics, such as moisturizer and powder, often associated as one of the acne’s precipitating factor.A study to determine the prevalence of moisturizing and powder cosmetics usage on individuals with acnewas conducted toward medical students of Udayana University who suffer acne vulgaris with cross-sectional descriptive study method. The data is collected using questionnaire to determine the acne prevalence, acne classification, moisturizing and powder cosmetics usage prevalence, frequency of cosmetics usage, face hygiene, family history, trauma, and menstruation.From 100 medical students, 92% of them was found suffering acne vulgaris and 92.4% of it is using cosmetics actively. The prevalence of the moisturizing and powder cosmetics usage in acne vulgaris patient is 88.2% and 83.5% consecutively. The results obtained in this study shows: (1) most of the respondents use moisturizing (69.4%) and powder (58.8%) cosmetics routinely; (2) The respondents still suffering from acne although they have cleaned up their face routinely after using the cosmetics (68.2%); (3) most of the acne patients have family history with acne (55.3%) and; (4) 89.4% respondents are likely to give trauma to the appearing acne in their face.Thus, it is concluded that the prevalence of the moisturizing cosmetics usage is more higher than the powder cosmetics in medical students of Udayana University. Acne also still occur although the face has cleaned up routinely after using the cosmetics. Counseling about selecting a safe cosmetics and prevention method of acne vulgaris other than cleaning up the face is necessary, so that the acne vulgaris prevalence can be suppressed.
