THE EFFECT OF THE NUMBER OF SWALLOWS IN MIDDLE EAR PRESSURE DUE TO ALTITUDE CHANGE ON TRAVEL FROM DENPASAR TO KINTAMANI

Traveled to the mountains can not be separated from health problems related to altitude changes due to failure of ventilation function to equalize the middle ear pressure. One attempt to prevent that is by swallowing. To determine the effect of number of swallows in middle ear pressure on travel by driving a car from Denpasar to Kintamani and vice versa. Descriptive analytic design with cross sectional analitical approach. Pearson correlation analysis with significance level of p <0.05. A total of 24 samples counting number of swallows manually and tympanometry examination carried out at the initial height (H0), when driving up to 1000 masl (H1) and 1500 masl (H2), when driving back to 1000 masl (H3) and the initial point (H4). Pearson correlation test obtained significant relationship between number of swallows and middle ear pressure either right or left ear at H1, H2, and H3 (p <0.05). Paired t test results of middle ear pressure before swallowing compared to after swallowing is significant, p <0.05. It can be concluded that there are number of swallows effect in middle ear pressure due to altitude changes on travel by driving a car from Denpasar to Kintamani and back from Kintamani to Denpasar.
