THE DIFFERENCE IN PREVALENCE OF COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IN ELDERLY WITH HYPERTENSION AND WITHOUT HYPERTENSION IN PUSKESMAS 1 DENPASAR UTARA 2014

Hypertension is one of the most common clinical manifestations in circulation system that takes part in increase disease burden such as cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment is an early sign of progression of dementia which can decrease the quality of life. The aim of the study was to determine the difference of prevalence of cognitive impairment in the elderly with hypertension in Puskesmas 1 Denpasar Utara from August to September 2014. This research was conducted by analytic observational method and cross sectional design with elderly subjects who went to the clinic. Data collection conducted by one period time. The examination of blood pressure using sphygmomanometer and cognitive function using MMSE. Data analysis using chi-square with significance ?=0.05. From 80 samples that met the inclusion criteria, obtained 45 samples (56.3%) had hypertension, 48 samples (60%) had cognitive impairment, and 23 samples (28.8%) had DMT2. Thirty four samples (70.8%) with hypertension had cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment had significant differences in elderly with and without hypertension (p=0.001) and with and without DMT2 (p=0.034). The results of this study are expected to be a basis for further research to determine independent risk factors against cognitive impairment in the elderly in order to take preventive measures.
