PREVALENCE THE CAUSES OF SUDDEN DEATH IN SANGLAH HOSPITAL SINCE JANUARY 2009 TO DECEMBER 2013

Introduction: Sudden death was defined by WHO as death occurring within 24 hours of onset of symptoms of disease emergence. Sudden deaths occur most caused by cardiac disease. The peak of sudden death in adults are aged 45-75 years. Methods: The research method was a retrospective descriptive using secondary data Examination Report in Instalation Forensic Medicine Sanglah Hospital since January 2009 to December 2013. The sample collection’s techniques used consecutive sampling and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: From 16 samples, the highest cause of sudden death is ischemic heart disease (37.5%). According to the characteristics of the sample, the number of men (93.8%) who died suddenly were more higher than women (6.3%). If based on the age distribution, the age group between 51-60 years occupied the first position in the case of sudden death (50%). Based on nationality, tourists from Australia took highest order for these cases (43.8%) while the citizens of Indonesia ranks second (18.8%). Conclusion: The highest cause of sudden death is from heart disease. However, the findings of all cases of sudden death is not purely due to cardiovascular disease. In some cases, it was found precipitating factors. Therefore, a thorough history and complete record keeping is essential to explore more about these factors.
