ABSTRACT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SERUM LEVELS OF ZINC AND NATURAL KILLER CELLS SERUM IN ELDERLY Infection is still a major health problem and the leading cause of death in the elderly in the world. Infectious diseases are usually caused by a decrease in the immune system. The decline of the immune system is especially true due to the aging process as well as the deficiencies of nutrients needed in improving the immune system, including the one mineral zinc. Various studies show that the status of macro and micro nutrients affect immunity both adaptive and innate immunity. Natural killer cells (NK) is one of the effector cells that play a role in the innate immune system is influenced micronutrients such as zinc. This study tried to find the relationship between serum zinc levels and the number of natural killer serum at 60 th- 90 th. The study design was a cross sectional study to find the relationship of serum zinc levels and the number of NK serum at 60 th-90 th in social institutions tresna wana while Denpasar. The sample in this study amounted to 30 people, magnitude of effect between the independent variables and the dependent variable is expressed with precision values 95% confidence interval. The level of statistical significance used the p-value of < 0.05 Of the 30 samples, obtained mean age 75.6 9.0 years, with the majority of women 24 (80%). The mean serum zinc levels of 63.8 7.4 zinc levels are low (<60 ug / dl) by 30%, zinc levels are normal (60-130 ug / dl) were 70% and zinc levels were high (> 130 ug / dl) was not obtained. The mean levels of blood cells NK 400 182 levels of NK cells is low (<90 cells / mm3) is not found, normal levels of NK cells (90-590 cells / mm3) of 43.3% and high levels of NK cells (> 590 cells / mm3) as much as 13.3%. From the analysis by Spearman correlation test there was no significant relationship between the levels of zinc with Natural killer blood levels in enderly patients 60-90 years old. The researchers concluded that there is no significant relationship between the levels of zinc with Natural killer blood levels in elderly patients 60-90 years old.
