Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University Participates in the Bali Orchid Festival 2025

The Faculty of Agriculture at Udayana University took part in the Bali Orchid Festival 2025, organized by the Department of Agriculture and Food Security of Bali Province in collaboration with the Indonesian Orchid Society (PAI) Bali. The event took place from November 1–7, 2025, at the Taman Budaya Art Centre, Denpasar. This year’s festival carries the theme “Anggrek KemBali: Unity in Diversity,” reflecting the rich diversity of orchid species in Bali, both naturally growing and cultivated varieties.

In addition to showcasing the beauty and charm of orchids from various regions, the festival aims to strengthen Bali’s floriculture ecosystem, particularly in the fields of orchid conservation and development. The Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University (FP Unud), stood out at the event under the leadership of Dean I Putu Sudiarta, Ph.D., along with a research team comprising Prof. Dr. Rindang Dwiyani, Dr. Ida Ayu Putri Darmawati, I G. N. Alit Susanta Wirya, Yuyun Fitriani, I Made Basma, and several other lecturers and students.

FP Unud presented a distinctive concept by displaying local Balinese orchids while serving as an educational hub for visitors. Throughout the festival, attendees could join the orchid discussion and education corner, open to the general public and students. One of the main highlights was the presentation of seed culture hybrids and tissue or meristem culture research developed by the university’s Tissue Culture Laboratory. The exhibition also featured the book “Anggrek Alam Bali” (Bali’s Wild Orchids), which documents the diversity of orchid species naturally found in Bali’s forests.

The head of the research team, Prof. Dr. Rindang Dwiyani, explained that the ongoing research focuses on developing short-sized orchid varieties suitable as table ornamental plants, using molecular and genetic engineering technologies. Meanwhile, Dean Sudiarta noted that the faculty currently has 20 undergraduate, 5 master’s, and 1 doctoral student actively conducting orchid-related research—demonstrating FP Unud’s commitment to advancing floriculture studies in Bali.

On November 5, 2025, Dean Sudiarta also served as a speaker in a seminar titled “Research and Innovation in Orchid Cultivation, Pests, and Diseases.” During his presentation, he emphasized the importance of synergy between research, innovation, and the conservation of biological resources to ensure the sustainability of Bali’s agricultural sector.

The festival was officially opened by the Governor of Bali and the First Lady of Bali. In his remarks, the Governor expressed hope that the Faculty of Agriculture at Udayana University would continue its dedication to researching and preserving Bali’s native orchids—such as Lenjong Orchid and Vanda tricolor—which serve as unique symbols of the island’s identity and pride. The First Lady, Putri Koster, also conveyed her appreciation for FP Unud’s role as an educational institution actively introducing Bali’s floral richness to the public.

Through its participation in the Bali Orchid Festival 2025, the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University aims to contribute to scientific advancement, community empowerment, and biodiversity conservation in Bali. The faculty hopes that its research and innovations will generate tangible benefits for agricultural progress and community welfare, while preserving Bali’s native orchids as part of the island’s natural heritage and pride.
