Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University Holds International Services, Animal Health Services in Bakas Village, Klungkung Regency.

 

In the current post-pandemic situation, Udayana Veterinary Teaching Hospital has expanded access to veterinary nursing in underserved rural communities. In expanding this access, the sole aim is to help the community in terms of public health, animal health, and protecting the environment without expecting any form of reward. Udayana Hospital with all staff and volunteers held a service in the field of animal health.

This 2022 international service event carries the theme: Field clinic service in veterinary medical emergencies for risk animal. The activity was held on Friday December 9, in Bakas Village, Banjarangkan District, Klungkung Regency, Bali. Dr. Drh.I Nyoman Sulabda, M.Kes as the chief executive of this international service said that this place was chosen as an international service because Bakas Village is a tourist village affected by COVID-19, so many dogs need attention, besides Bakas village is a Foster Village Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University and IVMA Bali branch. In this service, treatment of diseases in dogs and cats, rabies vaccination and community education about the importance of raising quality and responsible dogs, and population control in dogs and cats.

At the opening ceremony, the Dean of FVM Udayana, represented by the Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Drh I Wayan Sudira, M.Si said that this international community service program brings faculty and students into the community to provide valuable pet health care for underserved communities. Dr. Wayan Sudira stressed that for students who take part in this service program it is a combination of helping the community and animals in need as well as the opportunity to shape themselves into doctors who are more caring and empathetic.

 

 

According to the Director of the Udayana Hospital, Prof. Dr. Drh I Ketut Puja who is also the Chairman of the Bali Branch of the Indonesian Veterinary Association said that this activity was carried out in collaboration with an International Non-Governmental Organization, namely Animal Australia. This activity focuses on providing free health services to animals in medical emergencies, especially street dogs and cats. He further said that for the last 2 years, the Udayana Hospital had carried out similar activities but the service was only centered at the Udayana Hospital in Sesetan. Considering that the impact of COVID-19 is very widespread and this also affects animal welfare, the Udayana Hospital with Animal Australia is called upon to ensure these animals have a chance to live and ensuring their welfare is a priority. To increase the range of services, the Udayana, AA and VTH also collaborated with the Bali Branch of the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association, the Seva Bhuwana Foundation, the Sintesia Animalia Indonesia Foundation, the Klungkung Regency Agriculture Service, Udayana FVM Alumni, and the people of Bakas Village.

 

 

At the end of the activity, the Head of Bakas Village commented that this activity was very beneficial for his residents. Vaccination assistance, veterinary medicine and health checks as well as population control in dogs and cats are expected to improve the health of dogs and cats owned by the community so that they can assist the government's program in terms of eradicating rabies. Veterinary Medicine, IVMA Bali Branch and other non-governmental organizations to hold this activity, hopefully this activity can be done again in the future.

In one day of activity, the vaccination team that visited people's homes in three hamlets had vaccinated 71 dogs and 24 cats that had not been vaccinated. At the time of vaccination, direct education was also carried out to the community. For population control, 13 dogs, 16 cats and 6 tom and 6 queens were sterilized. As well as stationary animal health services treating 11 animals. At the end of the activity, Dr. Sulabda said that this activity could be of benefit to the community and if it was useful the VTH Unud would consider holding the same activity in 2023.
