Udayana University Hosts 2026 Indonesian Fisheries and Marine Higher Education Forum Meeting, Discussing Fisheries Transformation and the Blue Economy

Jimbaran – Udayana University, through its Faculty of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (FKP), hosted the 2026 Indonesian Fisheries and Marine Higher Education Forum (FKPTPK) Meeting, which took place at the Widyasabha Auditorium of Udayana University on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The event carried the theme “Strengthening the Role of Fisheries and Marine Higher Education Institutions in Supporting Sustainable Fisheries and Blue Economy Transformation.”

The event was opened by the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, and was attended virtually by the Director of Learning and Student Affairs of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Technology, Dr. Beny Bandanadjaja, S.T., M.T., as well as the Chair of the Indonesian FKPTPK, Prof. Fredinan Yulianda, speakers from LAM-PTIP, the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Head of the Bali Provincial Marine Affairs and Fisheries Office. The Dean of the Faculty of Marine Affairs and Fisheries at Udayana University and throughout Indonesia, Heads of the City/Regency Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Offices, the Chair of the Bali Maritime Forum, lecturers, education staff, and other forum participants were also present.

In his remarks, the Governor of Bali emphasized that the marine and fisheries sector is one of Bali’s development priorities through the “Balinese Economy” concept. He stated that Bali should not rely solely on tourism but must also strengthen its food and maritime sectors.

“If we continue to be a country that loves imports, we will never be self-sufficient,” the Governor emphasized, addressing the importance of food self-sufficiency and utilizing local potential.

He also highlighted Bali’s vast marine potential, from fisheries products to traditional salt, which has high economic value and is in demand in the international market. The Governor emphasized the importance of mastering the local economy to prevent foreigners from dominating it.

The Rector of Udayana University, Prof. Ir. I Ketut Sudarsana, S.T., Ph.D. stated that this forum is a strategic opportunity to strengthen collaboration between universities in developing education, research, innovation, and human resources in the marine and fisheries sector.

“Universities have a significant responsibility to prepare superior human resources who are adaptive, innovative, and sustainability-oriented,” said the Rector.

The Head of the Indonesian FKPTPK, Prof. Fredinan Yulianda, explained that there are currently more than 500 marine and fisheries study programs in Indonesia, with 489 study programs from approximately 145 universities having joined the FKPTPK.

Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Ir. I Wayan Nuarsa, M.Si., in his remarks expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in FKP Unud as host of the event. He stated that this forum provides a strategic space to bring together leaders and stakeholders in the marine and fisheries sector from across Indonesia.

He emphasized that the marine and fisheries sector plays a strategic role in national development, particularly in promoting a sustainable blue economy. Universities are not only required to produce competent graduates, but also to innovate, research, and contribute significantly to society and the environment.

This forum is expected to generate strategic recommendations related to improving the quality of higher education, strengthening research, updating the curriculum based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE), and strengthening the contribution of universities to the sustainable development of Indonesia’s marine and fisheries sector.
