Udayana University’s Faculty of Engineering Strengthens Industry-Based Learning Through the Implementation of the Toyota Production System

Jimbaran, July 23, 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering at Udayana University (FT Unud) continues to strengthen the quality of industry-based education through a collaboration with PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN). Held at the Faculty of Engineering’s Lean Manufacturing Laboratory, students had the opportunity to attend a public lecture and receive hands-on learning about the implementation of the Toyota Production System (TPS), a production system that has become a world-class manufacturing standard.

The event featured Nandi Julyanto, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., President Director of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), who shared his experiences and Toyota’s work philosophy with the Udayana University Faculty of Engineering community. In his presentation, he emphasized that Toyota’s success is determined not only by technological mastery, but also by a work culture that upholds integrity, innovation, collaboration, leadership, and a spirit of continuous improvement.

Students were introduced to the concept of the Toyota Production System (TPS) as a mindset and work method oriented towards root cause resolution, fact-based decision-making, and continuous quality improvement. Furthermore, participants learned the Genba philosophy, an approach that emphasizes the importance of directly observing processes in the field to understand the actual conditions before making decisions.

In addition to the public lecture session, the TMMIN group also visited the Lean Manufacturing Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University, to discuss the application of TPS in the learning process with lecturers and students. The discussion provided a platform for sharing experiences and providing input on laboratory development to ensure it is more relevant to the needs of the industrial world.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University, Prof. Ir. Linawati, M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., expressed her appreciation for the support provided by PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia in developing learning facilities within the Faculty of Engineering. She stated that synergy between higher education institutions and industry is a crucial factor in producing graduates with competencies aligned with technological developments and the needs of the manufacturing sector.

“We greatly appreciate the trust and support that Toyota has given to the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University. This collaboration adds value to the student learning process while strengthening the development of laboratories as educational facilities based on industrial practices,” said Prof. Linawati.

Furthermore, she hopes this collaboration will continue to grow, not only in terms of laboratory facility development, but also encompassing curriculum development, joint research, innovation development, and improving the competencies of lecturers and students.

The collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University, and TMMIN is a concrete manifestation of the synergy between higher education and industry in producing superior human resources ready to face the challenges of the future manufacturing industry. Through the implementation of the Toyota Production System in the learning process, students are expected to not only master theory but also develop a systematic mindset, problem-solving skills, a disciplined work culture, and a spirit of continuous improvement, all essential characteristics in the workplace.

Going forward, this collaboration is expected to continue to develop through various collaborative programs, such as strengthening industry-based curricula, applied research, internship programs, laboratory development, and capacity building for lecturers and students. Thus, the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University, is further strengthening its role as a higher education institution capable of producing quality, innovative, and globally competitive graduates.
