Denpasar – Udayana University (Unud) continues to strengthen the quality of its public communication as part of efforts to build its reputation and public trust. This initiative was realized through a Photojournalism Workshop held on Monday (September 14, 2026) at the Postgraduate Hall, Unud Denpasar Campus, Bali.
The activity equipped public relations staff with the skills to produce informative, credible, and engaging visual narratives. This aims to bolster information delivery and Unud’s presence in the digital space, while also strengthening the capacity of communication and information personnel—particularly in creating visual content that is informative, credible, and relevant to the public.

The workshop was officially opened by the Acting Head of the Academic, Student Affairs, and Public Relations Bureau (BAKH) of Udayana University, Agoes Hadi Birawan. The event featured speakers from the Association of Indonesian Public Relations Companies (APPRI)—Derik Saiful Saefulloh and Diki Meiga Umbara—and was attended by public relations representatives from across Udayana University. Also present were the Head of the Public Communication Unit (UKP), Dewi Pascarani, and the Public Relations Coordinator, Eka Lestari.
In his remarks, Acting Head of BAKH Agoes Hadi Birawan emphasized the importance of capacity building for information personnel as a means to strengthen Udayana University’s public communication.
“You are the ones who will serve as the spearhead for Udayana University, ensuring that future media management—across both social media and official websites—becomes significantly better,” said Agoes.
According to him, university media management is not merely about disseminating information; it plays a crucial role in shaping the institution’s image and reputation. Consequently, the ability to package information in an engaging, accurate, and responsible manner has become increasingly vital amidst the evolution of digital communication.

The workshop proceeded with a presentation titled “Speaking Through Photos: The Art of Journalistic Storytelling.” Participants gained an understanding of photojournalism as a medium for conveying information—one capable of presenting facts while simultaneously crafting a narrative through visual power.
The speakers explained that photojournalism goes beyond mere aesthetics; it must possess informational value, authenticity, and timeliness, while also representing events objectively. Furthermore, every photograph requires an informative caption to ensure the public fully grasps the event’s context.
In addition to visual storytelling, participants received technical training covering composition and camera angles, the “rule of thirds,” and the exposure triangle—comprising aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
Ethical considerations and authenticity in photojournalism were also highlighted. Participants were reminded to uphold information integrity, respect the privacy of subjects, and avoid digital manipulation that could alter the meaning or factual nature of an event.

Through this initiative, Udayana University encourages its communications staff to adopt a more professional approach to managing information and visual narratives. This capacity-building effort aims to support the delivery of credible, informative, and engaging public information, while simultaneously strengthening Udayana University’s presence in the digital communication landscape.
This step reflects Udayana University’s commitment to delivering public communication that is increasingly adaptive and impactful. It aligns with the university’s “Impactful Campus” spirit, ensuring that information and the work of the academic community are effectively conveyed to the public.
