DENPASAR — The International Office (KUI) of Udayana University (Unud), in collaboration with Naresy International Education Consultant (NIEC) Indonesia, held a workshop titled “SPEAK UP! – Building Confidence and Effective English-Speaking Skills.” Attended by approximately 100 Unud students, the event aimed to provide preparation, boost self-confidence, and motivate students planning to pursue further studies abroad. The event took place at the Nusantara Hall, Agrocomplex Building, Unud Denpasar Campus (September 9, 2024).
The event was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, and Information at Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Made Sucipta, S.T., M.T., IPM., who attended on behalf of the Unud Rector. In his remarks, Prof. Made Sucipta expressed his deep appreciation to KUI Unud and NIEC Indonesia for an initiative and collaboration deemed highly strategic for developing student competencies at a global level.
“For those of you planning to continue your studies abroad, English proficiency is not merely about understanding lectures or reading academic materials. More importantly, it is about the ability to convey ideas, express opinions, participate in discussions, and build communication within an international environment,” emphasized Prof. Made Sucipta before officially opening the event. He also encouraged participants not to fear making mistakes and to interact actively throughout the session.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Udayana University International Office (KUI), Putu Ayu Asty Senja Pratiwi, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., highlighted KUI’s commitment to facilitating various internationalization opportunities for Unud students. “At the International Office, we offer numerous opportunities for students to go abroad—ranging from short courses and internships to exchange programs. However, English proficiency is a crucial factor to consider. That is the primary reason for holding this event,” said Senja Pratiwi. She added that detailed information regarding study opportunities—including those at Griffith University—was presented to give students a realistic overview of what to expect.
On the same occasion, Arnantyo Naresyworo, Founder & CEO of NIEC Indonesia, shared his personal story of pursuing his education in New Zealand at the age of 18 with very limited English proficiency. While the experience initially made him feel awkward, it became a pivotal moment—a “moment of truth”—that pushed him to step out of his comfort zone and summon the courage to communicate with anyone.
“Studying abroad is a tremendous privilege for anyone. I do not believe that only the academically gifted or the wealthy can study overseas; students from all economic backgrounds and ability levels should pursue their dreams,” Arnantyo emphasized. He added that the key benefits of studying abroad include life experience, character building, and increased self-confidence.
Through this workshop, KUI Unud and NIEC Indonesia hope to inspire participants to be more confident in expressing their opinions in English and to promptly prepare the necessary administrative documents so they can take advantage of various student exchange programs and international scholarships in the future.
