FMIPA Udayana University was formed through several stages. Starting from the Decree of the Chancellor of UNUD No. 613/PT.17/I.a.012/1984 dated July 1, 1984 concerning the Establishment of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Study Program (PSMIPA) of Udayana University; then at that time 2 sub-study programs were formed, namely the Chemistry Study Sub-Program and the Physics Study Sub-Programme. Meanwhile, the new Biology Study Sub Program was formed on May 1, 1985 with the issuance of the UNUD Chancellor's Decree No. 325/PT.17/I.01.12/1985 which is a new sub-program of study at PS MIPA, Udayana University.

One of the basic considerations for the issuance of the above decision is the desire to form a special forum used to handle the basic sciences. Based on the fact, that the development process in various fields through the use of applied sciences really needs support from the development and mastery of basic sciences.

Over time, after being proposed to Jakarta, the Rector's decision above was followed up by the Directorate General of Higher Education with the issuance of the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education respectively numbered No. 63/DIKTI/Kep/1988; 66/DIKTI/Kep/1988 and No. 67/DIKTI/Kep/1988 which decided that the positions of the Physics Study Sub Program, Chemistry Study Sub Program and Biology Study Sub Program were managed under the Faculty of Animal Science, Udayana University. The decree also states that the three sub-programs of study are undergraduate programs (S1) and are inter-secondary study programs which are carried out in collaboration with FMIPA Airlangga University.

Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 81/DIKTI/Kep/1989; No. 91/DIKTI/Kep/1989 and No.92/DIKTI/Kep/1989; then the Chemistry Study Sub Program was changed to the Chemistry Study Program, the Biology Study Program was changed to the Biology Study Program and the Physics Study Sub Program was changed to the Physics Study Program. This third study program is an Inter-Faculty Study Program under the Chancellor and is a Strata (S-1) program.

Through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0382/0/1993 dated October 22, 1993 decided to form the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Udayana University which consists of 3 study programs (PS), namely PS. Physics, PS. Chemistry and PS. biology. Accompanied by the issuance of the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 07/DIKTI/Kep/1994 dated January 15, 1994 which determined that the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University consisted of 3 departments, namely the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biology.
